1050 engine in 850 TC

hello all,

have been looking for a solution for following problem; i am about to fit a 1050 engine from vizza motorsport in my 850 TC n'ring from 1962. the axle on the gearbox has the 6 big grooves. all good clutch plates 160 mm seem to have the 20 small grooves. aside of finding another gearbox, anyone has a good proposal ?

Maybe the 850 latest models cluch??? It is like the one you describe.

found one for 850  and 900 T, hopefully it has the 6 grooves...s i understand, the old gearboxes on the 600 and TC until maybe 63 have this set up.
otherwise i will look for a gearbox, eventually a 5 speed. if any one has a good suggestion ?

Berni Motori has kits to convert the 4speed to a 5speed and also complete 5speed gearboxes. try him

Hi Peter.  Early (600) transaxles have the coarse spline input shaft, and later (600D) have the fine spline shaft.  You can take your old coarse spline disc to a clutch rebuild shop and get them to rebuild the newer disc with the old coarse spline centre.  Or, you can install a later 600D transaxle, which are better anyway.  If you change to a later transaxle though, you will lose the drum brake on the front of the transaxle, and you will need to install 600D emergency brakes.  You can get the modified clutch disc from C. Obert & Co. in California.  He has had them made up.  I am using a Fiat 850 clutch disc and pressure plate in my 850TC nurburgring replica, and bought a 600D transaxle for it.  That will be one very nice engine!  Is it modified, or mostly stock?

thanks for the tips..guys.    the engine i will put in has ported head, bigger valves, sharper cam, two piece alloy oil pan, lightened 600 flywheel..that s all i remember...i will have to figure out what my engine that i take out is all about...has been built many years ago in italy and never really worked well..i want to do some hillclimbs and maybe an endurance race (3 hours) so the 1050 will be something safe and quick, hopefully...

i also  found an original nurburgring engine..just to have everything complete..

There is another solution to your input shaft problem.  There is a coupler on that input shaft.  Simply take a 600 coupler (coarse spline) and a 600D coupler.  Have someone with a lathe cut them in half.  Now have your friendly welder weld a coarse and fine half together.  How you have a coupler to couple the fine spline input shaft (using standard Fiat 850 clutch parts) to your Fiat 600 gearbox.

I used this same technique to 'lengthen' the coupler when I did my 5 speed conversion.  Still working after 7 years.

If you can find a 600D gearbox I would definitely go that direction.  You can get close ratio 4 speed gear sets for it, as well as 9/39 ring and pinion gears.  You will need the extra legs when you get the 1050 up to steam.

Don't forget about the safety mods.  Dual master cylinder - so you cannot lose both front and rear brakes at the same time.  Limit straps - so the rear suspension cannot overextend.  Crush spacer - Replace this spacer with a STEEL one.  If not the results are usually a broken axle and a rolled car.
