1976 photos attached are of simple economic use of VW Beetle driveshafts with a VW beetle box in a white Fiat 850 coupe.  Engine is Fiat 1500 of around 90-100 hp. Connection to 850 rear stub axle effected by welding CV flange to "star" shaped inner section of standard 850 flex joint. Axles were reliable over years of heavy use. VW beetle box required - minor-  indentation in floor pan for clearance.
Yellow 850 coupe has 200hp Fiat 1995cc twincam with 5 speed conversion VW  beetle box and so had twin CV driveshafts for higher power output. Has been very reliable in tarmac rally use.

Trevor,
Please correct me if i am wrong  ?  The yellow car looks like a car i competed against in Targa Tasmania 2000 and it broke down every day and failed to finish the 6 day event. Is it the same QLD car ?
Targa Tasmania (FIA) has since stopped allowing such 'specials' into its event as it was a long long way from the original car despite the owners claims.I only make this note for anyone thinking of putting such a dream into place and learning the bad news too late.A similar 124 spider 'special' was too hot and also got knocked back despite both cars being built in a professional manor.

Grant,
This thread arose on the subject of 911 transaxles and Fiat twincam engines, and includes references to use of VW transaxles similarly.
My comments were about transaxle/driveshaft reliability and stand.

Thanks Guy and Trevor,

the picture's from trever look good.
Trevor,  the driveshafts, are they standard VW Beetle shafts???
or are they machined to fit the 850 body?
i already have a porsche 901 gearbox and i think the beetle driveshafts wil fit to the gearboxflanges.

regards and a happy new year to all......

Abarthje,
The car was dismantled over 10 years ago, but I still have the driveshafts.
I will measure the shaft length and send it to you so that you can be certain on the standard VW beetle aspect.
Two body mods for those driveshafts:
a) the "opening out" or "spreading" of the faces of the trailing arm to clear the CV joint flange,  as visible in the first photo of Dec 29 post.
b) shock absorber in the standard position behind the driveshaft had a threaded extension bottom rod to clear the CV diameter.
