This is the car that competed in the London to Sydney rally... it was the only one made... I remember watching the car do a few special stages.... there was only one 131 diesel car entered... it doesn't even have the Independent rear suspension....

Guy, I believe these two cars are one and the same.... the "Singapore airline rally" was the name used for the London to Sydney that year...(1977 I think)  and the car you posted pictures of still has these stickers attached, and it still has the "Caution left hand drive" stickers that it wore during it's time here in Australia   (a local police requirement for LHD cars).... I am quite sure this is the same car that came to Australia...

If you look at your pictures and the one from the Italian magazine I have, there are some definite similarities...

Possibly they did make two, but my understanding was the car was specifically built for the London to Sydney rally, and I'm quite positive there was only one that competed in this rally (more of an endurance trial really)

Is it actually a 131AR chassis? I thought it was simply a regular 131 diesel  that was "Abarth prepared"..

it was a long time ago that I saw the car in the flesh... but I recall it not being a 131AR bodied car...

I stand corrected Guy... there were three cars entered.... it was a long time ago, (I was quite young at the time, about 15) I suspect I only saw one car competing as the other was quite a long way back in time penalties... (about 90 hours behind it's team mate) and the other didn't finish.....so this is probably why I can only recall one car

I did a quick search thru my rally archives... and found this... 1977 London to Sydney results....

Cowan/Malkin/Broad   Mercedes-Benz    2h 42m
Fowkes/Gorma               Mercedes-Benz    3h 37m
Hopkirk/Taylor/Riley       Citroën        3h 42m
Laurent/Ogier                  Citroën      4h 55m
Dunkerton/Watson/Bonhomme      Peugeot
Kling/Kaiser/Leninger    Mercedes-Benz     5h 21m
Vanson/Luc    Citroën         6h 25m
Kleint/Klapproth/Vornburc Mercedes       6h 26m
Johnson/Williams/Matson Mazda         7h 11m
Reddiex/Ferguson/Stewart Citroën         7h 16m
Green/Bryson/Leake   Range Rover     7h 46m
Taylor/Browne/Hunt   Range Rover      8h 21m
Zasada/Schramm   Porsche        9h 59m
Ingleby/Smith   Jeep       11h 44m
Neyret/Hoepfner   Fiat       13h 49m
Kot/Katarci                        Renault       14h 11m
Jeandot/Koch   Volkswagen   44h 08m
Davies/Latham/James   Datsun       89h 29m
Koseki/Takaoka/Okazaki Subaru       93h 34m
Nadler/Richards   Toyota       95h 29m
Bruce/Carracher/Turtle  Ford       101h 20m
Chuchua/Howes/Adams Jeep       102h 52m
Baghetti/Carlotti   Fiat       105h 15m
Aruba/Bukey   Renault       115h 26m
Wadman/Shand/Arthur Peugeot      143h 34m
Glass/Flanagan/Caddey Holden      151h 54m
Stathatos/Jensen   Peugeot      217h 43m
Connel/Keating              Citroën      254h 01m
Lundstedt/Hauge/Dahn Jeep      264h 27m
Holden/Monk   Peugeot      266h 15m

But what is more interesting is this photo..... it shows that there were in fact three cars made!!! so we were both incorrect!

the three drivers were Christine Dacremont (right), Robert Deyret and his navigator Marianna Hoepfner (center) and Giancarlo Baghetti.... there was actually another Fiat entered in this event, a privateer in a 132! (that was actually the last car home with over 600 hours of penalties)

So there are three... there's another one out there!

Hi Guy,

You have inspected the car. What is abarth on this car and what should it take to make it into an interesting rallye car again?

I would have no problem replacing the engine with a 16v and keep the diesel for history. But it seems that it is a std racing with an interesting tank, dry sump tank, fantastic dash, and front abarth wings. What is so nice about this car is that is has a very simple and clear history. Would you have any suggestions what we could do with this car?
