Title: What are these things in 1000 TC engine bay?
Post by: Pantdino on February 22, 2006, 12:06:06 am
Guy, can you tell me what these things are in your photo of a factory 1000 TC engine bay?

The tank on the left appears to be for the oil blow-by.

The tall thing  on the right must be more than just a filter. What is it?

Thanks,

Jim Oddie

Hi Jim.  The tall item is an oil breather "tower".  It attaches to the block where the mechanical fuel pump noramlly goes.  The alloy fitting at the top has 6 aluminum discs inside.  The purpose of the tower is to help oil vapours condense and drain back into the block.  Abarth made a short tower, and a tall one like in the photo.

The tank as you mentioned, is a "catch tank" to collect oil and vapours that have still not condensed back into liquid.  The fitting on the top is a spin-on filter.  There are two types of these tanks, the metal one for a TC and a plastic one for a TCR.

The 3rd Abarth item that goes with these is the "trident" fitting that hangs from the top of the engine compartment.  One connect to the rocker cover, one to the tower, and one to the tank.  I have seen a larger one, and a smaller one in photos.

You can still get replicas of these from BM.  I recently bought a set of these 3 items on ebay.  The photo you attached also shows some other later Abarth goodies like cooling header tank, and remote oil filter.

Regards,
Gil

Is it a pressurized oil reservoir, that pushes oil into the engine before startup or if the oil pressure falls in a corner?

Guy,

The large mechanical arrangement on the "right" of the engine compartment is a 'remote oil filter' assembly.  It is however much more than a remote filter.  In the base of this unit are two circuits.  Oil enters directly from the pump in the sump, via a fitting screwed into the block where the bypass valve would be on a standard motor.  Upon entering the remote oil filter assembly, there is a bypass valve (actually the same arrangement as in a standard block).  If the pressure is more than the bypass pressure, oil is returned via a seperate hose directly to the oil sump.  If pressure is normal, oil then goes to the full flow filter.  After going through the filter, oil is then routed via a thermostatic bypass valve also mounted in the base of this assembly.  If the oil is not up to operating temperature it will be routed via a hose directly to the main oil gallery of the motor.  If the oil is up to operating temperature, then the oil is diverted to an external oil cooler, and after going through the cooler is routed to the main oil gallery of the block.

Because of the large oil supply in this motor, this allowed the engine to come up to operating temperature more quickly, and it ensured that the oil was filtered by a 100% filter before going through the oil cooler.

This system was "borrowed' from the Lancia Flaminia motor, and used with a special adapter block to allow the connection of the various hoses.  Looks complicated but actually work very well.  Thus all of the oil manipulation is done outside the motor.

Hi,

casually I read this intereting topic and now right I would please ask you another technical clarification.

I own the same Abarth Carello remote assembly and I am going to restore and fit it. Any connection is clear but not the same for the several grub screws inside the filter base body... What is their function? Do I have to remove them and check the threaded holes to avoid oil leaking somewhere?

Than you for your kind help!

Guglielmo
