When my OT1600 is ready I'll start with a new project based on a Fiat 850.
Herewith some pics of my Fiat 850 and some articles about the OT1600 spider.
-
Fred, We love to watch your life through Abarths, Great work Quality, Authentic and Inspiring!! this one has our attention too!
Greatings and Support from the Australians!!
-
Great to hear that you'll like. I'll do my best to inspire myself and others!!
I saw at another topic that you've also had some 850's.
Herewith a picture of my OT1000, I race and slalom with.
-
Hi Fred ,
Are the 1600 Spyders all on sedan chassis, or the coupes are just the same? the body is something you have sorted out how to do?
Regards Rubino
-
Hello Rubino,
The OT1600 are all based on the platform of a Fiat 850 sedan/ berlina, not the 850 coupé.
The 850 coupé is different than the sedan. The floor is different at the backseat!
The body is not the problem anymore, it's more the structure underneath the body, but I've got allready a lot info and a lot of ideas to make the structure.
Next week my other OT will go to the paintshop and the 850 for the OT spider will go into my workshop to chop it completely. I'll keep you informed and if you'll have some info about the spider let me know.
Groet,
Fred
-
Hi fred, I knew there was a difference but do you think the structure can be modified to suit? sedans are near imposible to find here, i got lucky with the red one I just got after a year of looking!
Regards, Rubino
-
Hello Rubino,
I don't know if the measurements of the sedan are the same as the coupé, wheelbase etc. but you can change the floorpan. I'm going to change that to, because I want to sit as low as possible.
The 850 coupé-body is wider, but you can bring it back to the size of the sedan.
Do you want to build a spider too??
That would be great.
Groet,
Fred
-
Hi Fred
i'll keep a keen eye on the progress of this project.
I have a spare coupe body in bad shape but may be a good place to start.
Ras
-
Oké Ras!!
I'll update as soon as possible.
Groet,
Fred
-
Fred by the look of Ras comment there, I may have 2 more being built!?!!!....Ras what do you think, easyer than reinventing the wheel to make the Abarth2000 prototype?
Regards Rubino
-
Even better more OT1600 spiders, but making the 2000 prototype is also a good idea, Rubino!!
Well, making plans is always nice!!
-
Fred a dream would be to make a 2000 prototype, however the only one to look at or copy is in Japan, so the reality is a 1600 spider that you will do ,maybe acheivable when comparing projects for us. Only time will answer that for us! in the meantime the OT2000 America for Ras and my OT Mostra projects is enough.
Regards,Rubino
-
Hi Rubino,
To start two project is not a good idea, but I'm going to build the spider.
The projects you and Ras are going to make are also great cars to do and the info is more easy to get, because more people had build these cars as a replica.
(do you know the backpanel of the OT2000 americana was made out of fiberglass?)
To find enough info about the OT2000 prototype will be difficult, it's a unique car.
I hope you will start soon with your 850-body and I will keep looking at the website of BM to see any progress!!
I'm now going to change the cars from workshop to the garage so the 850-OTspider body can cut in pieces!
Have a nice weekend.
Groet,
Fred

Check out video on YouTube
Search for:
Abarth 2000 sport prototipo
Enjoy some fantastic sounds and driver skill. This guy has very large balls to drive an expensive car on a road like that!
Cheers,
Toby
-
Hi Toby,
Nice video clip, it's not a prototipo 2000 that we are talking about, but the sounds of that one are fantastic!! after digging abit found that Mobil oil company had a contract with Abarth for not only advertising but promo' work with the car , they were expecting more to be made and had plans to use in future adverts, but they only made one that I can tell and it lives today in a private collection in Japan.
Fred to you Sir, have you chassis plans and a build stratagy done? the fibreglass body you will make, or have access to molds? I am an certified welder and make my own chassis if plans are available to purchase, not now but this really starting to get my attention! Rubino
-
Wow, Good luck for your coming great project! :)
-
Thank you Toon or was it maybe to Rubino!?
And yes, Rubino, I've the complete plan in my head!!
I build the car allready a several times in my imagination or dreams, what you want.
When I'll start with the car I will let you know how things are planned and what you must do to transform an 850 chassis into an OT1600 spider chassis.
You are a welder and fabricator, I think, so that part will be no problem for you.
I'm only a teacher(science) with a lot of free time. This week no school, so working on the OT1600 and the new project, I hope!!
Groet,
Fred
-
Just had some time today and start with the OT1600 spider.
Cutting down!!
Maybe tomerrow more.
-
Yesterday some last cutting at the 850 chassis and it's ready build up again!!
Put the wheels under it and already saw the spider going!!hahhahahaha.
-
WOW!
Great progress.
Ras
-
hi Ras,
This was the easy part!!!!
In my head i'm going futher with building it!!
Groet,
Fred
-
Hi Fred,
I have never in my life been so happy and so sad all at the same time! sad cutting up an 850 !!....and happy I know its for a good cause! love the the progress pictures, have you plans on paper for this or is it stored in you mind? I have just been handed a chassis upgrade picture if you need it?
I will PM it to you - Regards Rubino
-
Hi Rubino,
You don't have to be sad about cutting the 850. It was in a very bad shape and yes for a good cause!!
I've got some pictures of the OT1600 that will tell a great part of the story about the strengthening of the 850 chassis.
Soon more!!
Groet,
Fred
-
Herewith 2 pics of some proof that the OT1600 spider is based on a floorpan of a Fiat 850 berlina.
Just see the 2 small mounting holes
-
did nobody think to use a serie one but better serie 2 Fiat (Seat) 133
-
Yes, it is possible to use the floor of a Fiat 133, but are those cars easy to find?
I did some work at the floor of the 850.
It's clean to work on.
-
Some ideas about making the spider stronger.
Making a higher sill than the original one.
-
Off current topic but a nice view of the front glass and roof of the speciale

Today I visit Guy for a very important step into my remake of an OT1600 spider.
I've got the molds of the OT1300 periscope. I'm going to use the molds to reproduce the product out of it.
These product will be rechaped to the specs of the OT1600 spider!!
This was very important for my build and now I can go on!!
thanks a lot Guy!!
-
After cleaning the molds I've just put them in mold release wax for the first time.
I'm going to repeat that 6 or 7 times this week. Then I can put on the gelcoat and the fiberglass and make my first product.
-
This weekend I make the first products out of the molds.
I'm very happy with the result.
-
Hmm, some photo's will be handy!!
At the first photo you'll see some sort of a tent build in my workshop.
For making glasfiber products you will need a higher tempature than it was in the workshop.
it's still cold in the Netherlands and the tempatures are just above 0 degrees celsius.
For the glasfiber you'll need a minimum 15 to 17 degrees celsius.
That's why I build the tent and put a heater in it so it was warm enough to work in it.
First the doorpanels. Grey gelcoat. The next day the fiberglas put on the doorpanels with coat.
After 2 hours the panel is ready to get out of the mold and I like the result
Next item will be the side of the car!!
It's allready in the gelcoat.
-
Also did some work at the OT1600 spider, wel the fiberglass part ofcourse.
First of all I made the sidepanel. Then I fit in the door and made into one piece.
I placed the panel on the car for a quick fit and a photo!! Some ideas are coming up allready!
Next week I will make the front or the back bonnet out of fiberglass.
-
OK Fred you are correct, I do not feel sad anymore!
that is very beautiful project so far, and yes I want to do both a sedan and a spider! First the sedan as I already have one worth doing to, then I need to look very closely at your build to find in myself, do I have the skill to do a spider!
.....and again love the updates, Regards Rubino
-
I was doing some small polyester work tonight.
In the meantime(polyester should harden) I did some metalwork at the OT1600 spider.
I want to make a higher sill to get more strength in th the car.
They are allready waiting for a few weeks. I made them at my work.
I cut out the old sill and the new one will soon be ready to welded into the car.
-
Saturday I picked up the most important parts of the OT1600.
Again cleaned them up and put them in the relaese mold wax, just like the other parts.
Nice to see that in the molds you can read "FIAT ABARTH".
Tomorrow morning I will put on the grey gelcoat.
-
I also did some metalwork at the OT.
-
And I started with the strengthening at the back of the car.
-
I was forgotten to mentioned that I allready made the engine mounts.
With a 1inch punch and flare I make the holes in the sheetmetal.
-
Fred
Fantastic work. You are going forward in great strides.
I particularly like the engine mounts. Very nice
Ras
-
Hello rraspa,
You know that the engine mounts are from the Fiat 600 only upside down.
groet,
Fred
-
This morning the molds in the grey gelcoat and tonight finished the other part(rightside) of the strengthening.
-
WOW!!! :-)
-
Today was also a WOW, but more a wow of time that it took to make the backend of the OT.
But it's finished.
-
here a proof that Porsche was working toghter with Abarth for gearbox design etc...
-
Last week I made the last parts out of fiberglass that I need to make the final mold for the OT1600 spider.
Next week, at the world abarth meeting, I'll bring back the molds to Guy.
-
Hello.
I want to join your forum with my onw project. This is not an Abarth OT 1600 sport spider replica, - this is the car of my onw construction, but inspired with Abarth OT sport spider 1600/2000, - rear engined track car (lightweght roadster), like Lotus Elise, Caterham 7, Renault Sport Spyder.
I have finished the frame.
The base is a strong central tunnel, having a fuel tank in it's front part and geabox arms in rear part of the tunnel. I suppose to use Ford 1,0 (125/140 hp) Ecoboost engine. Now, I am in process of developing suspensions.
Concerning the design of the car, I don't want to build a detailed replica. I want to build a modern car, with design inspired Abarth OT 1600/2000 spider.
-
I See you use the outbord engine ftting . Very direct to drive. take car what gearbox you will use ; Ford turns right ?
-
ZAZ 968 (a soviet rear engined car, - I'am from Moscow), - it fitted Lada Classic engine (120-160 hp) race cars very well. It can be modernised into 5-speed. Or Renault 25 with turned main drive.
-
I now this ,Its ok Always looking for old rally material for Lada Classic and Samara

The wheelbase - 2,1m
The length - 3,8m
The width - 1,7m
The height - 1,15m with antiroll bar
Estimated weight - 600...650 kg
