Fiat 850 spider build into an OT1000 racingcar
« on: November 21, 2013, 11:11:00 am »
I've got this allready for more than 12 or 13 years. I've raced with my OT1000 berlina in the Coppa Mille and want to return into this competion with an open racecar. That's why I bought this 850 spider. I start with it a few years ago and allready installed a rollcage.
Made a new floor into it en made some parts allready in fiberglass. The enigne will be a A112 1050cc engine with a Weber 44 DCNF, pistons 68mm with dome, a cilinderhead with bigger valves etc. The gearbox I'm going to use is a Skoda 5-speed gearbox from a 130 rapid.
I've also made the doors lighter by cutting out some metal. The wheels are from a formula car.

The other project, OT1600 spider is coming to an hold until I'm going to the abrth meeting in France in 2014. There will be some real OT1600 spider so I can take some measurements and pictures of these cars and I can make a better replica out of my car.

Hope you will like this project.

This spider is an 2nd series, but I like the 1st series more!!
Last night I had some spirit to make a mold out of wood for making the metal part for fitting in the 1st series headlights.
I've got a complete set of headlight including the tunnel were the light is fitting in.
The pics will tell the story. The new metal part can weld into the body as soon it is at my garage.

I found the rest of the original 1st series headlights!!
And yesterday I picked up some bodypanels of a used 850 spider 2nd serie.
The front of the 850, a door, a backpanel, so I have some spareparts.
I was glad to find the front, because the front of my own car is completely gone.
This front is a good base, but also with some history as you can see at all the bondo!!

To build a fast OTspider I'm going to do something special with the engine.
Rubin did this trick a long time a go!!
He fit an Suzuki GX coupé cilinderheadhead on a Fiat block.
GREAT!! More then 120HP!
I've allready got the other stuff that you will need to make this cilinderhead swapp work.

Thanks Fred,
But something tells me you will get more power than I did!... I do like the use of the motorbike Carbies, this is a new look at a conversion done 30years ago that I am happy to see how it is finished!.....hurry up I'm old and I can't wait anymore!!(HaHa!)
Just a couple of notes (if you have not already thought of) the oil feed external from oil gallery on pressure switch side to rear feed into back of Suzuki camshaft, go to the larger Suzuki head bolts and offset to suit in fiat block ,last 4 on outer need weld and redrill 3-5mm offset. weld Suzuki head to suit Fiat block water gallery , only need flat top piston to get over 9.8 compression on 903cc 127S1 block (are you doing a112 1050cc?) I used a 70-30-30-70 Cosworth regrind to my Suzuki camshaft, power started from 3800rpm and stopped around 8600rpm. Must do tooth-belt drive for water pump/alt' as the "V" belt flick of anything over 7800rpm!!!

Allmost one year later, but I'm at the moment busy with making the wheels I've got for the spider fit to the Fiat measurements.
The wheels centerhole is about 1mm to small. 57mm instead of 58mm.
So I have to make the hole a bit larger with a very fine mill.
Also the boldpatern isn't the same as Fiat. Just a few millimeters of, but that will be the next step.

Going to use the rearsuspension of an 850 that had driven 3000 km. When I took it apart it was like new.
Also I've got some aluminium breakdrums from a Fiat Multipla.
That will give a weight loss of 2 kg at each side!!

Did some work at the wheels. I must change the boltpatern of the wheels I'm going to use.
After machining the wheels I'm going to make inserts and glew them in, but that later.

Because the wheels are made out of aluminium I had to make new buses or inserts where the wheelnut will fit in.
The are all ready to glue in.

There will be a small change of plan with my 850 spider.
I want to go to race in a dutch historic racing series and they want the cars who are running these series to have a FIA Historic Technical Pasport. Unfortunately I want to race in the G2 class and the car must hva a windshield and the 2nd series nose!!
I allready cut that stuff of, but this week I found a perfect donor. Original dutch and in very good shape!!!!hahahahhahaha.
No, a perfect car to strip it futher down.

So I won't use the 1st series headlights and going to sell them.
Maybe someone with a 1st series 850 spider or Lamborghini Miura is interested!!??

Last night I finished the wheel. Put in the bushes I made and glued them in.
I used a bold and a wheelnut to press the bushes in.
The wheels fit now at a Fiat hub and they will fit on my spider!!
