Gearboxes to suit OT Replica Cars
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:58:58 am »
Hello all!
The past couple of months I have been looking at gearbox selection available to complete my OT (berlina) , Guy here I think likes the Porsche 901 series of boxes for the size, ratio's and how many have been used in the past ,also a Fiat 850 box turned upside down as Abarth themselves have done, In Australia we have a short supply of #901 gearboxes and even harder to find in good condidtion, as it is hard finding most parts that are readilly available in Europe!
I have a old (early 1990s) vw gearbox conversion from a previous Fiat twincam to 850 project done here, not happy with most of the conversion, yes it did work but with issues. This forum has been very good for infomation on my project "OT" but with many ways of doing the same job I have to find a way forward with parts easy to find and hopefully in reasonable condition, I have found this on another forum for Fiat group cars, this subaru gearbox shop will sell a reverse crown and pinion set for rear engine vehicles!

http://subarugears.com/

I don't have the knowledge on Subaru gearboxes for strength or ratios, but think they are 30 years younger with parts available here and do know how easy they are to find in any condition !
So far have found these gearboxes used on Fiat 850's - Skoda130, VW type3 (4speed), Porsche 911 early and late(#901) and now Subaru!
I look forward to your thoughts on subaru and any other gearboxes used!
 Regards Rubino

I know that through the '80s in Australia, the Renault 16 gearbox was most used for rear engined Fiat and Vw conversions, later the Reno' 21 and 25 Gearboxes, is there any other type used? ....is the hard to get Porsche #901 the King of rear engine type gearboxes?
Rubino.

A friend of mine is building a renault 5 alpine gearbox in his 600!!
They are strong enough to keep 150 to 200 BHP.
You can use a twincam engine without building them to anticlockwise.
Yes, the gearbox is in front of the engine in the R5, so move it to the back of the car and your ttheir. The renault 5 is also a clockwise engine!!

I think a Subaru 5 speed gearbox is very long!! It maybe not fit into a 850 chassis!

Fantastic Fred, Reno' 21 or 25 is easy to find in Australia! much better than a cheap Japanise box in a Italian car! I'm on my way to look at one this week!

Wow, this has been a long road to nowhere! I am back to the VW type-3 4pseed box for Ren and myself, mainly because Subaru has lots of types, ratio and torque strengths , non that will fit with the little effort of the VW for length, CV's etc! we have available to us in Australia adaptor plates, axels and a range of parts for the VW type, having driven a Lombardi scorpion with a Fiat 2ltr twincam in the tail and loved it, it has been in the car for a decade and reliable, take a look at the Cast Alloy adaptor we have with the flywheel on the dummy motor!

Looks good the adapter. It looks like the adapter I've got from PBS for my OT.
