Fiat OT 2000 Coupe America
« on: May 21, 2011, 09:43:16 am »
Hi
I am currently building a replica

I am using a VW gearbox mating to a fiat twincam

I still want to use the fiat 850 mechanical speedometer

The vw box doesn’t have any input for the Speedo cable.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Which type of VW gearbox are you using?  I have a T3 (Vanagon Doka) and the speedo drive is off of the front wheel hub.  Were older VW's similar?

Update: I have checked my old Greg Schmidt parts book on 600/850's and he does not mention any parts available for speedometer conversion.

I am contemplating an OT2000 conversion/tribute myself with a Lancia Beta block, and was wondering if a Porsche Type 901 gearbox would fit without sheetmetal modifications.  I believe that 901 gearboxes have a speedometer drive on them:

I have read that the 901 gearbox is a bit smaller than the VW box.

There are many shops on the web that advertise recalibration of the speedometer.
This shop may do it for Veglia instruments http://www.paspeedo.com/ [nofollow]

Some Type 915's have an pulse electric speedometer, I have no idea what it would take to adapt something like that...but then I have heard that the gearbox is too big to fit into an 850.

Hi Keith
i am using a VW type 3/ Super beetle box. As you ,mentioned they did run the speedo from the front wheel.

i have heard that an older style Porsche gearbox can also be used, not sure of the number is 901.

i was lucky enough to find a good VW box and a guy in Australia makes up the adaptors and flywheels to fit between the Fiat block to VW box.

I have found a few company's on the web that take an electronic signal and convert it to a cable drive. I need to find out more a bout the product.

Good luck with your project, keep me updated

I believe the VW and Porsche 901 bolt patterns are identical?  I have heard that the 901 box is not as bulky and performance upgrades are available.

Please post photos and details of the flywheel and shaft adapter when you can!

Hello friends of the "OT"
I am also doing a replica OT in Australia using a Fiat twincam, after reading this thread and already having a vw type3 gearbox without speedo drive ,need to ask about the "901" gearbox-
1. has a speedo drive suit Fiat 850?
2. has driveshafts bolt-up same as vw box?
3. has bell housing to engine bolt-up as vw box?
4. has ratios that better suit 850 street/track driving?
I need to know if dumping the vw box and buying a 901 will make a better conversion for a better overall car,
any advice? can you help me!

You might like to research the Fiat 124/Porsche/VW transaxle adapter detail on website and as supplied by Miller's Mule Machine and Design   www.millersmule.com

Thanks Trevor,
That is a nice website ,but I have the bellhousing flywheel and clutch sorted just wanted to know if vw to porsche fit-up was the same (it is the same) and if the #901 speedo drive was usable with a Fiat 850 speedo cable. plus is there any other benifit to dumping the vw box for the #901 type.
cheers!

Convert rear hubs from fiat 850 to Fiat 128 as shown in diagram and make a new bracket for the disk brake caliper

Hi Fred

THESE ARE NISSAN SKYLINE R31 REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPERS,
THEY HAVE A BIGGER PAD AREA THAN THE FIAT 124 SPORT.
I WAS TRYING TO FIND FIAT 125 OR LANCIA BETA CALIPERS THEY ALSO HAVE A BIGGER PAD AREA, BUT NONE WERE AROUND AT THE TIME.
