will an 850 distributor cap work on a 127 distributor?
« on: February 25, 2008, 02:01:30 am »
Hi, Everyone,

My 850TC replica has an A112 A2 motor with a Marelli S146 distributor. One source I have shows that to be from a Fiat 127.
Will a cap for a Fiat 850 fit on it and work properly?  That is the kind I can source fairly easily here in the US. We never had 127s so people don't know about them.
If so, which Fiat 850 motor, the 817, 843, or 903cc engine?  Any particular years?

Thanks,

Jim

The 850 series used 2 different Marelli distributors through the years. The 843/817 models used a Marelli S-118 unit (short alloy base, 3-3/8" tall side-entry cap or 4" tall top-entry cap), while the 903 used a Marelli S-140 (tall alloy base, 2-1/2" tall side-entry cap). Both distributors use a clip on each side to hold the cap in place (ie: cap is not held on by 2 screws).

How tall is the cap on your 127 distributor?

My car has a top-entry cap that measures 3 7/8 inches-- probably the 4" cap you describe

I have ordered a cap and rotor that look like what I have from ebay and we'll see if it fits.

I have also ordered a Pertronix electronic ignition unit, coil, and rev limiter.  Hope it all fits together. :-)

Thanks for your input-- I'm more confident I"ll be getting the right part now.,

Jim
