The designer of the ASTECH head for the Fiat 850 engine was Dale Tholen, who passed away years ago. The heads have not been produced for quite some time, though there are still a few to be found floating around the market every now & then. Are you looking for any particular information about this head?

JO/EL Engineering was run by John Edwards, who currently runs an R&D/machine shop in Costa Mesa, CA, USA, and still toys with Fiat engines from time to time. http://www.engine-machining.com

I bought one of these heads years ago from Jeff on ebay. It is a real beauty but I have yet to run it.

John Edwards is still working on and racing Fiats. He also is working on casting some parts again.

Check him out racing his Fiat 850 Berlina.

If you are looking for a high performance head Scuderia Topolino has PBS heads for USD $922.

Guy,

If I can help with cylinderheads, please let me know.  I am currently making several of the items formerly made by PBS.  This includes the 8P PBS head, the PBS Shorty Water Pump, PBS 2-piece oil pan and the PBS 3-piece wheel center.

I am working on a couple of other items as well, but it is too early for any announcement.

Best regards,
Paul Vanderheijden

Hi Jim,
For those of us who aspire to build 'hot' engines, do you remember what sort of HP increase you were getting by using the Astech head over the standard?
Also, can anyone suggest which head is superior? The PBS or Astech? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both.

Cheers, Toby.

Hi Toby............ Sorry for the somewhat  slow response, but i don't check this forum very often, as far as i can see    the PBS & Astech push rod motors were close to the same output at 843 cc (which is what we had to run in SCCA DSR) 110 hp was a good motor,  both the PBS & the Abarth twin cams were  somewhat higher and the PBS single overhead cam motor was someplace in between.   With a  112A  bottom end to work with and  maybe 1100 cc displacement , more power can be had.  as far as advantages/disadvantages,  it depends on what you are going to do with the motor ,  just like any other motorsport project "speed cost money, how fast do you want to go" .........one big advantage of the push rods is simplicity, with the Astech, all the stock 850 parts fit the head, valves ,springs, rockers, the works !.......  if your intent is to race , and win,  and cost is not a main focus, then i belive the twin cams have a slight advantage!  but then as Tholen used to say "thats just my opnion"..........Jim                                                                                       jbailie@brumos.com
