alternative diff ratio for 850 gearbox-help!
« on: November 27, 2007, 01:15:04 pm »
Can anyone give some advice on lower final drive  ratio (approx  4.3) for the 850 gearbox. This is for 1000cc motor so 8/35,9//39 would be ideal. If you are looking for one yourself then please contact Paul from www.scuderiatopolino.com [nofollow] and leave a message on the forum. We are trying to find "expressions of interest" with a view to fabricating some new sets but are not sure if there is any demand.

Cheers,Toby

Hey Viotti600,
I am not Paul! I am Toby!

I never said you (Toby) were Paul. I said that PAUL has already posted information here on this very item you are asking about (see the link I referred to above). PAUL asked for comments, and the most logical place for someone to add/post comments (or ask for more information) on the topic would be on THAT particular thread. Quite simple, no worries!

I am trying to drum up ANY information I can about this so please offer advice to the question or don't post at all!

Toby.

What more "information" or "advice" about these parts do you need??? You haven't asked for anything in particular, even across the 3 different forums that you've posted this to so far (2 of those where I DID offer pertinent info to you). If you want certain info, you need to ask specific questions. So far, all you've done is ask for no particular info/advice, at the same time telling people to contact Paul for these parts.

NOTE: WE ALREADY KNOW TO CONTACT PAUL FOR THESE PARTS BECAUSE HE ALREADY POSTED ABOUT THEM HERE A FEW DAYS AGO.

Either ask us what it is you want to know "...or don't post at all". ;)

Cheers,
-JS.

J.S,
Sorry, maybe we're getting off on the wrong foot here.I'm desperate to find a solution to my problem, I've been trying to find something for a long time now.I thought by posting in" parts wanted" it might reach another audience.Surely there are other 850 owners out there who might like the sound of Paul's proposal?
I'm frustrated that I can actually have this part made but need another 9 people to join in the venture. Then I get more frustrated getting replys from people who give advice and offer opinon but can't actually help me, so sorry again I know you are trying to help and I thankyou for your efforts thus far.

Cheers, Toby

The last time I saw a Simca 1000 in a scrapyard was in Coventry in 1975!. ---Its now 2008, there must be lots of  easier and more reliable solutions nowadays than using all that old stuff.

Yes, the Simca 1000 ring & pinion can be installed in the 850 gearbox. The large retainer nut will hang off the end of the pinion shaft a little more than with the 850 ring & pinion, but it does not cause any problems. Be sure to use the Simca speedo drive gear, as well.

Is the speedo drive the tiny little pinion on the end of the pinion shaft?

Yes. I think there is also a mated (plastic) gear that fits into the (nose) end cover of the transmission, like on the 850. This is the piece that physically drives (spins) the speedo cable.

Okay,I've found a 8/35 Crown wheel & pinion from a Simca 1000.The pinion shaft has a small metal pinion on the tip (like fiat part# 4104670).It seems to mesh okay with the plastic speedo gear (#4189859) but will my speedo read correct or does plastic gear need to match?

Cheers.
