Gas tank
« on: October 16, 2007, 04:31:35 pm »
I am building a replica 850TC nurburgring circa 1962.  My car is a 1958 model and has the early style gas tank that is on the passenger side.  What would be the correct gas tank for me to use, the early style, or the later style (and larger) style that goes across the width of the trunk space?  I have a later tank that I could use, but would need the mounting straps, etc.

Thanks,
Gil

My car is a 1964 and has the "on the side" type.
My father had a 1967 car that had the "across the whole thing" type, so I know the change was made somewhere between those dates.
So a 1962 car would have the kind you have.

Thanks for the info. Jim.  I was hoping I didn't have to convert to the later gas tank.

My 1964 had the passenger side tank.
What can I test for you?

I think the switchover from the earlier small/squarish tank to the later long/cylindrical tank was likely in late 1964/early 1965, when the change from rear-hinged doors to front-hinged doors also occurred.

My car has the early gas tank but front-hinged doors, so it wasn't a coordinated change.
When did they change to large headlights for the European cars?  I think that was in 1965--so maybe they changed the fuel tank then.
But probably they made all these changes independently.
