Where to find Zagato body numbers
« on: October 05, 2007, 02:57:12 pm »
Hi,

I have recently purchased a 1959 Record Monza after a very long search. It's my dream classic and I hope to have the car restored in the next few years once I have pieced together the competition history and tracked down the handful of missing parts.

According to The Italian Car Registry by John De Boer, my car should be Zagato number 43. Does anyone know where I should look to actually find these numbers on the car?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Fritz.
Some friends in Argentina, bought a few months ago Record Monza here.
Maybe it is the last remaining.
They are in the city of Rosario in Argentina.
They know these cars.

Fritz.
The Italian coach (Zagato),  traced the number of the car on the inside of the doors, engine cover, and capot.  Were this because these pieces were made by hand and were all different. Just go to that car.
If your Record Monza is the number 43, that number are looking at these places, maybe find them there.
Some time ago I saw in a Osca 1600 numbers marked in this way.

Almost all of the coachbuilders like Zagato, Allemano, Nardi, Viotti, etc. marked the body panels, upholstered panels, seats & alloy/metal trim pieces like this. You will often see the car's particular coachbuilder ID number (not the chassis number!) stamped onto the back of each metal trim piece (front grille, exterior trim mouldings, window mouldings, window-winder mechanisms, door latch mechanisms, etc.), as well as hand-written on the backside of the interior upholstery panels or stamped into the seat frames. The writing on the body panels is still sometimes visible inside the door shells or underneath a front/rear decklid. These numbers will normally all match (all the same number), unless an item has been replaced.

All of the Abarth 750 Zagato & Abarth 750 Allemano cars I have owned or have worked on have had coachbuilder identification numbers stamped/written in this manner. My 1956 Fiat 600 Viotti Coupé also has numbering like this written on the back of each upholstery panel, as well as being stamped on the seat back frames and under the front hood near the latch.

My car has the number "514", like this:

Interesting, JDB suggested that the RM I purchased would have a body number of 43. It has. Found on internal trim, door surrounds and in the centre of the windscreen under the dash when the car was soft stripped prior to being restored.
